After many
adaptations of novels present failure of the movie studios began to look at the
title-title filmed earlier times were tough. Trilogy The Lord of the Rings and
The Chronicles of Narnia series proves that the ancient novels also have a
fanbase that is not less great with popular novels today. Based on the
considerations that ultimately Ender's Game, which has gone through many twists
and turns of the difficulties in the process of adaptation, filmed and aired on
the big screen. Published in 1985 first novel by Orson Scott Card is touted as
one of the intermingling of sci-fi novel and a very good military and advanced
for its time. Director Gavin Hood
commanding actor-old young and talented artist in the process of adaptation
Ender is the
unwanted child in earth raging war. 50 years ago an alien race called Formic
attacked and nearly destroyed the earth. During the attack the earth tough luck
pilot named Mazer Rackham sacrificed himself by crashing his plane into an
alien mothership - Formic race forced to withdraw from their invasion. Humans
learn from their mistakes and start preparing for a possible strike next Formic
race. The way they prepare is to educate the young boys to get in early on the
frontal face of the Formic War
Among the
children there was a genius named Andrew 'Ender' Wiggin. So far, life has
always studied by scientists and leaders who then stated that Ender is a
talented kid who can use his strategy's ability to win the war against the
Formic later. Finding the brilliance of the first step of a new child. Now
Ender invited into the school of war called the Battle School where he had to
compete with the children of other selected brilliant. Ender will success
become commander in the war against the Formic? If yes, whether genius is able
to destroy the race that formerly almost beat around the earth?
If you expect
Ender's Game as a sci-fi spectacle then be prepared to be disappointed. Very
disappointed. Whether this comes from the novel or not clear the world built by
Ender's Game is full of logic holes in the theory of sci-fi as well as in
leadership theory proposed. Take for example the battle of Battle Game lesson
conducted by Ender with his friends: in theory it makes sense asking the
children fight to train their intelligence and dexterity in the movie but in
practice there is no payoff in the climax of the story. Directed by Gavin Hood
trying to incorporate two elements of the same strategy in both these scenes
but the results instead seemed forced. Please visit here
Narrative and
the film flow is another weakness of Ender's Game. I know that Ender is a child
who is brilliant as Commander Graff (played by Harrison Ford) repeat this
almost every time there is a dialogue that should he say, but still it does not
make sense that in a few months he became commander of the most trusted in the
entire military force of the earth. In other words rise to power of Ender was
so fast that I could not sympathize with him. Everything runs like auto-pilot
just as Ender did not bother to reach that position.
For the setting
itself Ender's Game movie where the budget relatively impressive 110 Million
USD for this movie really reach to outer space setting where Battle School as
well as for military locations of this movie. Unfortunately the film is not
much to the present situation in the earth so that we never know how the
situation of the earth who have always lived under tension following an attack
of Formic race. Come to think of it not in fact the situation is similar to
what is experienced by the characters in the tale of Neon Genesis Evangelion?
After reading
this far review you might assume that I hate this movie. Wrong. Although the
film failed in the framework of sci-fi and military he actually excelled in
other things, whether intentional or not, that is a metaphor spectacle current
social order. Many things ranging from the regulation of two children, children
who used the army, to the education of children in the early modern period is
done and the harder it into something that is flicked and raised in the film.
Maybe our hearts sad to see Ender and his friends are treated as instruments of
war for the purposes of the adults in this film, but would not the children in
Africa (continent of birth of Gavin Hood) also suffered the same fate? And do
not we also now increasingly hard to teach our children early on so that they
are "brilliant", "smart", "do not compete", and
"be a leader" in an era of increasingly competitive now? If judging
from this angle, the Ender's Game into a brilliant social commentary wrapped in
a sci-fi element.
The biggest plus
point in the film is starring Asa Butterfield is Ender figure. Ender is a
remarkable figure and Butterfield complex displays every range of emotion from
both of her grief when Ender hurt his friend, his pleasure when successfully
beat the system, to disobey the orders of the brave! In the casting film that
has a row of good caliber senior actors (Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola
Davis) and junior actors (Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin) ability drives the
Butterfield becoming most certainly deserves its own praise.
