When the film 12
Years a Slave emerged as the champion of the Oscars in 2014 and I was quite
shocked. Because Gravity since the beginning to the end has been dominating the
gain trophies, including best director who falls into the hands of Alfonso
Cuaron, so the opportunity to be the best film Gravity is enormous. 12 Years a
Slave filmed a Steve McQueen movie Shame and Hunger third after getting
tremendous hype since it was first announced. Not only because of casting an
all-Star alone with stars like Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, and
Brad Pitt in the movie but also the courage to raise the issue of slavery as a
theme of the film.Later, since Barack Obama became president, I did notice a change in the trend of world cinema. Lots of movies are the theme of racism and slavery. In 2012 for example there of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. Even Steven Spielberg's Lincoln also speak about how the President praised America tried to stop slavery. In 2013 I remember at least three films of similar theme: 42 that is racism in the sport of baseball, The Butler, and 12 Years a Slave this. What this film does have a proven high quality deserve to win best film award wins or he just simply because of the hype and sheer bravery raise sensitive topics?
Solomon Northup
was a lucky man. He lived in the north America. Areas where slavery is nothing
unusual there. There as a black man Solomon was a free man who can run the
day-to-day lives without fear. He has a loving wife and two children who make
her days full. When his wife and children were on an outing for a few days,
Solomon who has the ability to play the violin very - very nice invited to join
the circus tour by two new people he met. Solomon did not think at all that he
is in fact the center framed. Please visit here
When he was
unconscious Solomon brought directly to the south, the area is very nasty and
cruel to black people. Please note that the story of Solomon is the case in the
1840s, in the year in which Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery has not been
successful of all Americans (American Civil War occurred in the years
1861-1865). Taken there, all the words of Solomon concerning himself as a free
man ignored and instead rewarded with a fist, punch, and lashes were
persecuting him. Slowly but surely the mind of the person who changed Solomon
believes that he is free to be the person who believes that he is a slave who
must remain silent so that he was not beaten. Can Solomon passed himself from
his slave owner? Could he reunited with his family?
Solomon here played
by Chiwetel Ejiofor, the actor who is perhaps best known by the Indonesian
people as a figure of the protagonist role of the 2012 movie here Ejiofor as
Solomon was challenged and forced to display a variety of emotions ranging from
anger, hurt, frustration until slowly changing into despair. All of this is
shown by Solomon through body language is very good. Try you observe changes in
the movement and style of speech that Solomon is becoming increasingly distant
from a slave who never in his life tasted free life.
Of a row of
figures supporting this film is a lot of popular names but Benedict Cumberbatch
and Brad Pitt feels really lacking is maximized. Cumberbatch is the main figure
of a slave owner who represent the majority of those of us: someone who is
always stuck in the system. Someone who knows true in our conscience that
something is wrong, but never brave enough to do something to change it. The
figure of John Ford, starring Cumberbatch is actually very complex and
appealing to exhumed - unfortunately the film does not give enough time to dig
about it and Cumberbatch is not slick enough to play it in the time allotted to
him. Instead duo Paul: Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti appeared as a scene stealer
in every scene of their occurrence.
In the second
half of the movie then the two figures into lives for this film featured Steve
McQueen: Michael Fassbender as a cruel slave owner Edwin Epps and Lupita
Nyong'o as Patsey, a slave woman who became Solomon friend in this movie.
Nyong'o who resigned to life - and do not have expectations to be free - is the
contrast of the figure of Solomon which although slightly still want to be free
of her life as a slave. His performance here is very nice but for some reason I
still feel he is not worthy of winning the Best Supporting Actress trophy when
compared with the performance of Jennifer Lawrence in the American Hustle. On
the other hand Michael Fassbender is a figure of evil, cruel, and tragic. He is
a representation of everything that is wrong at the time: a person who believes
that humans are not created equal in the eyes of God and use religion to
justify their freedom to own slaves.
See it in the
eyes of the figure now Epps is a monster figure that should not even exist in
this world but in the future it is something natural existence. Epps in brief
is the most complex figure here and yes, fortunately Fassbender is up to the
task to play it to the fullest here. Many people are saying that this is the
best role of his career and acted Fassbender was not wrong. Fassbender is a
young actor with a bright future as long as he continues to be smart to choose
the roles that he play. One day who knows only Oscar would actually received
by him in the future.
And all
eventually returned to the expertise of Steve McQueen in the movie gush lasted
more than two hours. This film does have a rather slow tempo at the beginning
of the movie but I think this was intentional McQueen not only that we may know
the character of Solomon alone but to really understand his desperation and to
understand how different American countries in that era and in this era. See
how much America has changed. It is a country that is less than 150 years ago
enslave blacks. And look who becomes President they now? Blacks. Additional
music by Hans Zimmer fitting liven melancholy in this film, sometimes a very
interesting contrast with the abomination that is displayed without censored by
McQueen. Too cruel? Maybe, but also realistic.
So my conclusion
is ... 12 Years a Slave is one of the best films of the year. Enough said. I
did not have a mind to see it was selected as the best film at the Oscars last.
This movie is an important piece of history and needs to be watched by
everyone.
