In 2009 a small
budget scifi movie called District 9diam secretly appeared and surprised many
people. Not only the actual film is an extension of the short film Alive in
Joburg was able to get 210 million USD from the budget of only 30 million USD,
he was also able nominated in one of the best films of 2009 and despite
eventually losing to The Hurt Locker. Yet nevertheless Neill Blomkamp name
directly on the rise and many people look forward to what the next project he
would work on. Year after year passed without news until finally Elysium
started production in 2011 and was released last year. With polished budget of
nearly 120 million USD (a 4-fold from District 9!) Whether Elysium can rival
the quality of the predecessor?
In the year 2154
the earth not as we know it today. Seedy and full of pollution most people who
live there live from day to day to get a roughing money for hope to go to
Elysium, a space station residence of the men wealthy. However the cost of
living in Elysium is very expensive so it is almost impossible for someone who
lived on earth - even working lifetime - get enough money to buy his life
there. But still at the moment of human life they always look squashed up and
missed expectations. As it was also thought that dawned on the minds of Max Da
Costa.
Max wants to
leave his life on earth and moved to Elysium. He has used a variety of ways to
achieve it, including less commendable behavior-behavior that makes it a lot to
have a criminal record. To leave all the bad records first end Max was trying
to work legally. Apes actually an accident at work to make Max into a high-level
of radiation poisoning. On earth it means knocking sledgehammer waiting for
death. Hope for Max left to Elysium where fairly sophisticated treatment could
save his life. Looking for a dark road to Elysium will not be easy so what
should Max do?Find your pleasure here
One of the
things that surprises me when looking at the production design of this film is
the setting of the place. Neill Blomkamp seems not to want to move away from
the style of shooting his dystopia world. If we scrutinize in more detail again
is not there the similarity city of Los Angeles is the future of the
Johannesburg show that he used to be in District 9? There are shades of
defilement to a place where criminalism and police regime with strong
strangling the poor who live there. I also love how Blomkamp worked Elysium as
a reflection of the lives of workers present. When looking at Max with
recounted an incident thrown out of employment when deemed no longer useful so
smile pouted my own, perhaps the fate of so many workers in developing countries
(including Indonesia) who suffered the same fate. Milked until the power and
usefulness runs out then rewarded the 'appropriate' then discarded.
Given director
Neill Blomkamp is no longer a nobody like himself four years ago, the few big
name actors and actresses are ready to work with him. The two main stars of the
most advanced in the film are Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. To me both provide
adequate role in their character, but in the end their true character not too
different from most other characters made it difficult praised their
performances. Max is a character that makes us sympathetic and annoyed with his
behavior throughout the film. Sympathetic because we know how hard it is to
live in a world like this, but also annoyed because he did not see how much
faster acting as the hero in this story. Seeing Max I was reminded of the
character Danny Archer, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film Blood Diamond.
Perhaps more disappointing is Jodie Foster's role as Jessica Delacourt cold and
firm to play its role. The lack of a back story of Jessica (except one or two
sentence reference) so we can not make him sympathetic at all. It is also the
biggest weakness in Elysium: overly antagonizing the rich side.
What a surprise
when I say that the best role in the film acted by Sharlto Copley as the agent
Kruger? Copley appearance that makes me so mad all at once pugnacious very -
very impressed with the appearance at all times. Copley also proves how he can
perform style chameleon actor with a role very different from film to film. In
District 9, he appeared as a depressed and frightened, in The A-Team he could
appear funny and a little crazy, and here he last performed one of the best
antagonists that I watched on the big screen this year. Once badass Kruger even
when she met Max and Jessica I still like him better than the two main
characters!
Budget of 115
million USD disbursed in this film is also used as efficiently as possible by
Blomkamp. Wrap the quality of the CG in each scene quite neatly combined with
the creativity of Blomkamp in the way of taking pictures and using certain
techniques. One thing I love about Blomkamp is it quite creative and bold try
without having to grip pegged by a particular technique. Not such as Michael
Bay is making slow-mo or JJ Abrams lens flare is used as a trademark. Blomkamp
also uses slow-mo in this movie but he is quite a lot of other techniques
combine to make Elysium still feels creative and dynamic.
