Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. And once
again wrong.
Growing industry
is remarkable today is the video game industry. The video game industry is a
unique industry because it combines the active and passive at the same time. A
spectator movie or series can not change the movie they are watching. Thousands
heard the song will not change the song into something else. Video games are
not so. You control the game. In this context of video games as an
entertainment medium is not changed again but be a sport. Sport to the world a
new era: the virtual sports. E-sports.
The term E-sport began to emerge when games introduce a competitive element in it. This actually has existed since ancient times. Remember how happy we are when it went to Arcade Center then overpower all the while playing Street Fighter II? Yes, come home it feels like a big boss. Then came the new technology in the computer world that brings competitive gamers to the next level. This time they did not just compete against each other, but a lot of people at once. Games that appeared accommodate this as Counter Strike and Dota.
Dota is a
phenomenon. Similar to Counter Strike which is the result of a Half-Life mod,
Dota is a mod of the popular game Warcraft III, which became more popular than
original game itself. After years of Dota community slowly but surely evolved
from small into something that is played by hundreds of thousands or even
millions of people in the world. It is not surprising that international
tournaments began to be held and the professional gamers (those playing for the
money) to follow.

movie focuses on the preparation of three professional game players: Benedict
Lim (Hyhy), Danil Ishutin (Dendi), and Clinton Loomis (Fear) which are three
famous Dota player who defends three different countries: Singapore, Ukraine,
and the USA. All three men went into the 2011 edition of The International
tournament which was then the most prestigious video game tournament and offers
the greatest reward. How large? The first winner will get 1 Million USD! All

Play is an eye-opening movie about the challenges of professional gamers. Both
Hyhy, Dendi, and Fear all opposition from the parents of each when deciding
seriously want a career in the gaming world. The main pressure is most felt by
Hyhy who live in Singapore. Understandably, parents Asia (especially Singapore)
very high demands of her children. Many times parents Hyhy stated during the
interview that they wish their children to stop playing games and learning more
seriously. Dendi and the Fear and do not get that much opposition also
questioned the seriousness they face life by each parent.
That's not the
only problem faced by all three. Fear for example, is approaching the age where
he will be deemed less competitive (past the peak age) while Dendy still
smarting after the death of his father a few years ago, pushed him into a
person who wants to run away with playing games and become one of the best
gamers in the world. Interview-interview in the film is then coupled with the
progress of this five-day tournament where the tournament is haunted by
monsters from the Chinese team. Many people may think that this film
documentary team highlight China with a negative spotlight but it was not true.
The reality is a good e-sports in China and in South Korea taken seriously and
the players trained military there to produce players of world-class caliber.
Those who are
not gamers do not have to worry about the confusion following this movie since
Free to Play provide a brief explanation but it is easy to understand the rules
of Dota. The point is actually very simple: you are part of a five-man team
that competed with a team of five other people. Your aim is to destroy Ancient
(main headquarters building) of the enemy. Who first crush he has won. Before
the game you may choose one of the tens to hundreds of characters available -
each with different abilities. That's it.

just a little bit of trouble explaining a few moments at the end of the film
where the characters in the film use strategies that are more advanced in this
film. Although Valve as the producer already using CG animation to facilitate
non-gamer audience Dota understand what happens we still find it difficult to
understand how cunning maneuvers performed by the players here, aided only by
the comments of the commentators who go into the this documentary.
So my conclusion
is ... Free to Play is a documentary about one of the best gaming I watch, just
a little under Indie Game: The Movie. Presented in a similar format (follows
the lives of three people from the industry are highlighted) each have
different levels of success, this film is an eye opener about the ups and downs
of the life of a professional gamer. Still think the game just for little kids?
Please watch this movie.
