Chushingura, or the story of the
47 Ronin is one of the most popular folklore in Japan there. It's been a variety
of films, plays, and TV series that picked up the story. Now Hollywood did not
want to lose. With the figure of Keanu Reeves as Asian stars involved in it, it
is not difficult to imagine that funded movie studio Universal is expecting
great success on two fronts at once: country western and eastern cultures like
the eastern states are proud of their country mythology popularized to the
entire world. However, since the beginning of its production 47 Ronin has
always encountered many difficulties. Filming is started from the year 2011 and
then delayed. Should release schedule in December 2012 was delayed until
December 2013 so year long! Are all these delays will result in better or worse
for the movie itself?Kai is a slave of mixed blood who actually has the ability as a great samurai. He falls in love with the daughter of the ruler of the land Ako: Asano Naganori but his love story with Mika always hampered due to differences in the status of both. Kai is also often underestimated by the samurai of other Naganori because he deemed unworthy by side with them. And so on until the arrival of the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi to Naganori area.
The arrival of the Tokugawa was
accompanied also by Kira, a leader of another land long targeted Ako also wants
to annex land. With the strategy assisted by wizards Mizuki, Kira success
Naganori malign and make him angry shogun. Naganori kind sentenced to commit
seppuku (suicide honorably Japanese style) and left to 47 samurai under his
leadership became Ronin (Samurai no man's land). Ronin is increasingly making
the offense is Mika Naganori child forced to get married with Kira. Under the
leadership of the head Ronin Oishi, 47 to his rise to seek revenge for his
master.
Basically the story of the 47
Ronin is the potential to be a great epic ... if not diembeli with fantasy
elements. The story is written by Chris Morgan, Walter Hamada, and Hossein
Amini seems imposing to incorporate elements of fantasy style dragons, giants,
and monsters in this movie. The fantasy element of the story but instead
enriches even distract the audience from what could have been a touching story
about sacrifice and self-esteem.
Similarly, the figure of Keanu
Reeves and a forced love story. Every time the film was panned figure Oishi Kai
and instead the film becomes unattractive. Kai is a figure that is very flat
and has never been explored at all during the film. Take for example when he
finally accepted to be part of the 47 Ronin, as if there are no emotions in
him. Are not the people who receive them now are the ones who insulted him
first? Should not there pride and a sense of anger and a sense of forgiveness
that can be demonstrated by Kai? Nothing at all. Keanu Reeves plays Kai like
boredom and like actors who get caught are forced to participate in this
project.
Oishi, played by Hiroyuki Sanada
is the best figure in this film. Sanada successful show him that sad over the
loss of his master at the same time want to do anything to regain the
self-esteem of his master lost (good name). The concept of self-esteem and
honor is something that may be difficult to grasp by the west is more
glorifying victories and results above all else so that the total Oishi
appearance in this movie hopefully it can open people's eyes to what it means
to sacrifice western culture in the country Sakura. Unfortunately the film is
always changing focus between Kai and Oishi, cut the screen time to fully
realize the story Oishi.
On the opposing side's own figure of Kira
also feels underdevelop by the script of this film. Why would he want to master
Japanese Ako and never elaborated why. In fact, throughout the film he feels
more like a doll than Mizuki displayed with life and full of cunning by Rinko
Kikuchi. I feel that this film is actually supported by the appearance of
Sanada and alone ... and ironically Kikuchi Kikuchi face shown only as a
secondary figure and Sanada altogether absent in this movie poster. The film
also actually be better if the actors in it speaks in Japanese rather than force
yourself to speak in English. It is said that this film does have two versions
and may only Japanese version is much better than the English version (not much
anyway Kai figure of the dialogue).
