Johnnie To is
one of Hong Kong's director of pride today. He is not only the most prolific
director in Hong Kong but also a director who never tired of trying to try a
wide variety of genres. If To is usually better known in the drama genre with
films like Romancing in Thin Air, Turn Left, Turn Right, or Love on a Diet, so
this time To strive to try different genres in the Drug War. This police
thriller genre is new to the To field, so could he bring something new in a
genre that seems to have been defined by Infernal Affairs as masterpiece it?
This film brings
two character actor primarily: Louis Koo and Sun Honglei as two figures come
from different sides of the law. Koo in this film acts as Timmy Choi or Choi
Tin-ming, a drug dealer caught in China as being high. On the other hand Sun
Honglei role as captain Zhang Lei who is a dedicated law enforcement agencies
to suppress all kinds of action using drugs in China there. In China is not
like in America (a la the movie Snitch) where the dealer only be sentenced to
decades in prison. In China penalties for drug dealers who exceed a certain threshold
are not messing around: the death penalty.
Timmy Choi is a
coward man who was frightened to death. Therefore he begged the captain Zhang
Lei to give him a chance to prove himself. The trick is simple: he wants to
tell the captain all sorts of information that he knew about his drug network,
including an operation that is now underway. Of course the captain who has a
lot of experience the world of drugs is not as easy as it just believe him.
Under the strict supervision of the two were working together. Will the success
they stop drug trafficking to China? And if they do they successfully stop one
of them is going to affect the long term? Please visit here
Drug War is the
first action film directed by To in China and greater budget allows it to work
on an ambitious film. The film actually has a scenario mediocre successfully
performed above average because dark and gritty demeanor and above all helped
because of the performance of the two main roles. I was very impressed both
with Sun Honglei and Louis Koo. Honglei here appear as a police aide quiet and
can say almost without emotion. Shown with full seriousness of his job to face
can make certain characters so boring (what drove him to be very motivated for
instance?). Yet it seems to appear Honglei Zhang Lei made the captain is more
than just a single individual, but to be like the Chinese state representation
dedicated full arrest anyone who dared to use drugs in their country.
On the other
hand Louis Koo once again proves that he is indeed one of the best actor in
Hong Kong today. If you think that Koo can get on his career today just by
relying handsome face just then try to watch this movie. Here Koo appeared as a
figure of total coward who fears his fate and no pride at all. He was willing
to sacrifice all his colleagues and even his own family for the sake of her
safety. Just like Honglei be a representation of a country determined to
capture the Chinese drug users, as well as successful Koo appeared transformed
as a parable of the drug users in China there.
Many critics are saying that the
shootout that occurred at the climax of this film as the weakest and most
impossible in this movie. While the scene might not make sense (actually, quite
reasonable) I personally feel that this is where the brilliance To be seen as a
cinematographer. How to capture images up to how he execute choreography
complexity brutal combat shooting and chaotic in the film are perfectly capable
of lifting the film to the next level. It's an amazing climax and I would not
have it any other way.
